It's easy to assume baby teeth don't need much attention because they eventually fall out. In practice, they hold the space for adult teeth, guide healthy jaw development, and let your child chew and speak properly. Untreated decay in a baby tooth can spread to the developing adult tooth underneath it.

We recommend a child's first dental visit by age one, or as soon as the first tooth appears. Regular check-ups after that let us catch small issues — like early decay or crowding — while they're still easy and affordable to treat.

At home, start brushing as soon as the first tooth comes through, using a soft brush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. Supervise brushing until your child can tie their own shoelaces neatly — that's usually a good sign they have the coordination to brush well on their own.
